Disruptive Brainstorming
Change & Agile Mindsets
Workshop Goals
- Challenge your creative thinking
- Push yourself and your team to consider new perspectives and think outside the box
- Face rapid change collaboratively
- Generate new ideas
Description
In this fast-paced and high-energy workshop, your team will be challenged to generate new ideas under pressure while considering new perspectives. In rounds, teams brainstorm solutions to a pre-defined problem. Each round introduces a new constraint to consider, pushing your team to think outside the box. Between rounds, teams send ideas of other teams to the cutting floor - without discussion - before being given a new constraint and brainstorming again. No judgement, no limits, no time to get stuck on old ideas. Just an open mind and adaptability!

Facilitator Notes
Optional facilitator notes are available to help you run this experience. These are not mandatory, but include some tips which might be helpful to have on hand. If you are not using the Lucid board, we recommend having these on hand to ensure you have instructions to refer to.
Step-by-Step
- Make a copy of the template or ensure you have a version of the disrupt cards ready for use. If using Lucid, make sure you make your own copy of the template first by hovering over the document name and selecting "duplicate". If running this workshop in-person, print cards and ensure you have all necessary supplies ready.
- Define a topic for brainstorming in advance. If possible, create a document including background information or research on the topic which the team can review in advance. This might include customer personas, research about competition, user research, etc.
Start the experience by letting your team know you're here to produce as many ideas as possible. Remind everyone it's important to keep an open mind, and the experience is not about discussing or debating ideas. Everyone's ideas are valid - and all ideas can be cut without discussion. Assure the team you'll be left with a few good ideas worth pursuing.
The experience is designed to challenge teams to quickly react to new challenges and adapt to new scenarios. Keep an open mind and don't take it personally when ideas get cut. We want to practice a growth mindset, so be open to all ideas and practice rising to new challenges!
- Keep groups to a reasonable size - if you have a large team, you might need to divide participants into 3 teams. In this case, make sure to delegate which team will remove ideas from which other team in the cutting round.
- Enforce the rule of silence during the cutting round! It will be tempting for some people to try and defend or sell their idea. Remind them that this will challenge them to get more creative.
- At the end of the experience, take a moment to celebrate all the ideas which were cut. Your team has generated a lot of great ideas today, and not all of them will have made it to the final round. This doesn't mean they weren't great, too! Appreciate their efforts and willingness to leave some ideas behind in order to pursue others.
- If preferred, consider using the breakout function in lucid during the 10 minute brainstorming sessions. Teams can brainstorm without seeing the work of the other team, and you can copy over their work to the main board after each round.
- Assign owners to the final ideas at the end of the experience. Owners are responsible for getting these ideas off the ground.
- Debrief what was challenging, what you learned, and how you can use these insights in future projects in a follow-up meeting. How did this help you consider new perspectives? What did it feel like to see your ideas get cut and not be able to discuss it?
